Day 58- Colonia del Sacramento

Today we woke up and headed off to the port to catch our ferry across Rio de la Plata into Uruguay. We never would have known of this option had it not been mentioned by one of our tour guides earlier this trip. They said a 1 hour ferry ride across the river got us to a beautiful old Portuguese colonial town called Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay.

The boat ride was uneventful (also, if you’re counting, that’s the 4th mode of transportation to get across a country border so far: plane, bus, foot, and now boat) and a pretty colonial town it is. We first had to find lunch and what a feast we had! Uruguay has this fast food thing called a Chivito, which is basically thin steak, bacon, a couple eggs, cheese, onions, tomato, corn, peas/carrots, plus some sauce, all between some burger buns. They served it in a plastic bag so it would all hold together. Delicious!

After that we had some time to walk around the city and go up a lighthouse to get some panoramic views.

The city is also on the east coast of the river, so from there you can see beautiful sunsets over the water. If you look close, you can even see the shadow of Buenos Aires’ skyline in the distance.

After sunset, we headed back on the ferry, grabbed some dinner at a cheap local parilla, and retired for the evening.

  1. Our “what a burger ”
or our “whooper” sure they look quite under stuffed comparing them to the one you show here. Good appetite. Don’t these places serve wine or beer?
