Bogota Day 3- Monserrate/Andres Carne de Res

We headed out early this morning for a hike up to the top of the church overlooking Bogota called Monserrate. The trail was about 2000 feet of elevation gain in a mile… so it involved a lot of steps. Neither of us had really realized how high Bogota was- about 9000 feet! The hike up was pretty crowded, but the rain held off and the views at the top were worth it!

We spent some time up at the top, then headed down. On the way down, I tried a fruit called chontaduro. It tasted a bit like a sweet potato, but not quite as sweet.

We got back to the hostel fairly early, then headed out to a vegetarian restaurant with a set menu that turned out to be pretty delicious. We also tried juice of Borojo as part of our meal.

We wandered around some more of the attractions in Bogota, including the Santa Clara museum and the Independence Museum. After some museum hopping, we headed out for a happy hour hot chocolate with cheese!

Our big activity for today was going to a restaurant/bar/club called Andres Carne de Res. According to the Lonely Planet guidebook, it is “an otherwordly entertainment cocktail that is equal parts Tim Burton, Disneyland, and Willy Wonka.” We had arranged transport with the same guy that brought us to the Salt Cathedral yesterday. Around 6:30, he asked us if we wanted to practice some dancing before we headed out, so we had our own little dance party before taking off around 8 to Andres. It was a pretty great experience. We had yummy food- provoleta, arepas with different toppings, and some more ajiaco! Then after dinner, it was time for dancing. There were 3 different dance floors that we found, and the music was great. When our driver told us it was time to leave at 2:30, we still weren’t ready to go! Buuuuut… we did.

I’m very glad that you had so much fun in Bogota, you covered almost everything. Now you have a better idea why we are like we are and how different we are from one place to another.
    Big kiss.
