Bogota Day 1- Museums

Lizzie and I started out the day with a visit to the Museo del Oro, a huge collection of Native American Gold pieces. Some of the metalwork was super detailed.

After the museum, we walked through some of the older churches, but no pictures were allowed in most of them.

By that point in time, we were pretty hungry, so we headed to a typical Colombian restauant. Cassie had a milk and cheese soup called Changua- definitely interesting and good enough, but probably wouldn’t rush back to get it.

Next stop was the Botero museum, who does paintings of (hmmm… how to say this PC… ) curvy figures, including a chubby mona lisa.

Next stop was the national police museum, where we took a tour and saw some of Pablo Escobar’s things, including a desk with a large hidden compartment, a roof tile with some of his blood, and a collection of his guns.

In the afternoon, we met up with a free walking tour. As usual, we heard a lot about the history of the city and the country. We stopped by some more churches, tried Colombian Chicha, ate a cheese arepa, and walked by the presidential palace/other governmental buildings.

We ended the tour at a bar with a beer playing a game called Tejo. Little packets filled with gunpowder are stuck onto a metal rim. One then proceeds to throw heavy weights to try to hit the packets of gunpowder to make them explode. Most hits wins. I was the lucky one this time!

We went out for some pre-dinner drinks at a square called Chorro Quevedo, both of us tried the typical drink called canelazo (similar to the Ecuadorean canelazo but slightly different). It was very warming in the cool weather. We started walking around looking for a place to eat around 8:00 PM and realized that almost nowhere was open! Apparently this part of town (La Candelaria) is busy during the day, but relatively empty at night. We finally decided on a place called Bogota Beer Company, where we had some craft beer and dinner. After dinner, we headed back to the hostel for some sleep.
