Galapagos Day 4

We started the morning at James Bay, Egas Port on Santiago Island, where we did a walk across the island. We saw our first Galapagos fur seal, which was different (bigger whiskers, shorter nose, generally smaller size) than the Galapagos sea lion which we had seen the rest of the trip. We also saw a female lava lizard with red coloration as well as some new birds- yellow warbler, American oystercatcher, Galapagos dove, and Wimbrel. There were some natural rock bridges that made for great pictures as well.

We went back to the beach, where we put on our snorkeling equipment and headed out to snorkel around the rocks. Here we saw some more white tipped reef sharks, as well as stingrays and some more beautiful fish. Cassie also saw one of the best camoflauged fishes that she has ever seen. (Can you pick it out in the picture that looks like black sand?)

We went back on back on board for a lunch, today was burgers and grouper. Again, we had some time to relax in the afternoon while we headed over to Buccaneer Cove. Once there, we hopped in the water for another round of snorkeling. Shortly after going in, Cassie saw 3 sharks just sitting on the bottom! This location was really cool because there were a couple of underwater caves/arches to swim through. The fish, again, were so pretty!

The seocnd afternoon excursion was to Espumilla Beach on Santiago Island. We were greeted by a pelican and a young Galapagos hawk.

We took a walk back through the mangroves to an area that sometimes turns into an inland lagoon with flamingos, but unfortunately it was all dried up when we were there without any birds. We did see some pelicans and blue footed boobies diving into the ocean when we got back to the beach, and we hung out for a little while before we headed back to the boat for the evening.

  1. Congratulations to all. You are very fortunate to go and see nature in full force. All the different kinds of marine life to see it so close. Wonderful.
