Today we started out the day meeting our guide at our hostel for the free walking tour of Lima at 9:45. He walked us across Miraflores to the Metropolitano Express bus to take us into Lima. We learned about the pre-Incan, Incan, and colonial periods of the city. We visited the Plaza de Armas, where the president lives. We got to see the changing of the guards.
Also on the Plaza de Armas is the the oldest church in South America can be found (though it has had to be rebuilt 8 times due to earthquakes).

We also went inside one of the most famous churches in Lima. Apparently the skulls of the Peruvian saints are on display as well. Look closely…
We also saw the first post office, photo studio, and dance club in colonial Lima along with a lot of antique balconies. We stopped by the market and took a walk through Chinatown as well. After the tour was over, we hopped back on the bus to Miraflores.
Next on the agenda was a visit to Huaca Pucllana, the site of a large pyramid and surrounding area. These were built by the Lima tribe about 1400 years ago. Their style of building was called bookshelf (you may be able to see why). The rainfall there is so little, that we could still see original wood posts that helped with the structure. Many tombs were also found in teh pyramid. Like Choquequirao and so many other historic sites, the pyramid is only half uncovered. It is suspected the other half will take another 30 years!
Next, Cassie wanted to take a stroll to the Barranco area south of Miraflores, so we walked down through that neighborhood and along the ocean before stopping for some dinner- another parrilla.

We walked back to the hostel then caught an Uber to the bus station for our 9:30 PM bus to Huaraz.
Very captivating how the pyramid was built and so fascinating to see this type of construction in rel life.
The parrillada looks spectacular. I’m sure tasted delicious.
