Trekking to Incan Ruins, Day 8: Lucmabamba to Aguas Calientes

Woke up at 5 today for our last day of trekking. We started out with a solid 2 hours of uphill to the last pass.

Just over the pass, we got our first glance at some of the terraces at Machu Picchu, and saw some ruins at Llaqtapata, which likely used to be some kind of purification city before entering the holy city of Machu Picchu. Again, we could see many structures that were overgrown with trees, bushes, etc.

We descended to the Hydroelectric Station, where we had lunch. After lunch, we started the last 6 miles to the town of Aguas Calientes.

We arrived around 1:30 to Aguas Calientes and had some time to hang out in the hotel. We enjoyed some hot showers and Wifi after a week of not having any, and we did some planning for the upcoming week. We did some laundry as well. Around 5:30, we met our guide for dinner at a restaurant that the company chose for us. I think the food cooked by our chef was actually better. Again, we called it an early night to get up tomorrow for Machu Picchu!

  1. I’m impressed with the Incas and their cities but also with you going up and down those very high mountains.
    Congratulations.
