Trekking to Incan Ruins, Day 2: Rosaspata Baja to Choquequirao

Woke up at 6:30 to hot coca tea in our tent, quickly followed by a HUGE breakfast of egg tortilla, potatoes, mixed fruit salad, and a quinoa hot drink. Yum!

After filling up on all the food, our trek started which involved climbing up, and up, then up some more. After a few hours we finally got to the park entrance to Choquequirao. By this time a lot of the morning clouds finally cleared up and we got our first views of the ruins!

After the park entrance it was another 45 min to 1 hour until reaching our campsite. Once we got there we had some time to relax for a bit before eating lunch. After lunch it was time to explore the lower terraces that we had seen during the morning trek! It was really muddy on the way down so it took us a little while to get there but it was very worth it. And we were also the only people around these ruins so got to explore them all on our own which was awesome!

Here was the water temple. Apparently when it rains, the Inca’s had designed a system /canals for water collection that turned into a fountain around this temple. Unfortunately we couldn’t see this in action today.

After thoroughly climbing up and down the stairs of all the terraces it was time to head back up. By this time it was starting to get dark so we had dinner then headed to bed so we could go explore the large ruins bright and early tomorrow!
