Day 50 (2/20) – Waira Caves and Pucará

We met our guide at 9:30am this morning for a hike over to the Waira Caves. From what we had read, it is an unmarked trail and a guide is required. He told us a little bit about the local plants and history as we made our way up. There were beautiful views of the city and the Quebrada that the town is in.

We made it to the top and visited the first cave, which went back about 100 feet. The next cave involved a little crawling at the beginning, but then opened back up on the other side to some fantastic colors on the hillside.

We hiked down then headed to the Pucará de Tilcara, which are old ruins from the native people before the Inca conquered them. They had some places very nicely rebuilt, as well as areas that you could see what the ruins looked like when they were originally found. We were initially excited to reach the large monument at the top, but when we got there, we realized that it wasn’t native at all. It was a monument to the archaeologists that started rebuilding the Pucará, and they actually destroyed a bunch of the original main square to build the monument! Very upsetting…

We found a lunch place with a 100 peso ($5) menu del dia with picante chicken and a soup, that turned out actually being very delicious.

For the rest of the afternoon, we just hung out around the hotel- did some laundry :(.

Since we had enjoyed our first Peña experience in Salta so much, we decided to try out another one, and we were not disappointed. We had some empanadas for starters, then Cassie had locro, a traditional stew of the area and Alejandro had stewed lamb. For desert, we had Goat cheese with Dulce de Cayote (candied Figleaf Gourd) on top. It was fantastic! The music was also very enjoyable.
