Day 46 – The Uyuni Salt Flat

Today was the first day of our 3 day 2 night Uyuni Salt Flat Tour. After breakfast we went to the market for some cheese and nuts for snacks, packed up our things, and headed to the tour company to load up the vehicle we would be spending a lot of time in within the next 3 days.

First stop was the Train Cemetery. These were all steam trains that weren’t used anymore after diesel came around. They were kind of cool because we could climb on them (can’t imagine that happening in the US…).

Next stop was a small town with a market of local goods, then on to the main event- the biggest salt flat in the world! In the dry season, it is essentially a desert of salt, but during the rainy season (which is when we went), it turns into a super salty apparently endless shallow body of water. It was pretty crazy to see all of these cars driving through what looked like a lake.

First stop was a hotel made entirely of salt, where we had our lunch. Even the tables, seats, and statues were made of salt.

Next stop was for some picture taking. It is a great place to take some really interesting pictures playing around with perspective. Our guide was great at taking them and giving us ideas (you can tell he had done this a time or two).

He took a really amazing video too.

After the salt flat, back into the car for a 4 hour drive to the hostel for the night. The drive was beautiful though.

We didn’t get in until around 7:40. We had dinner provided for us along with some hot drinks then headed to bed.

  1. Super pictures. Isn’t this the place where there is a lot of the metal used for the batteries. Rare elements like Lithium?

    • Yup, definitely in the area. Not sure if necessarily in the salar itself, but for sure nearby especially on the Chile side (the salar is very close to the border), the company Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile has a very large lithium mine. We learned of it when we visited San Pedro de Atacama actually, which is very close to the border from Bolivia.
