Day 43 – Martes de Challa

We went out again for Saltenas this morning, then headed over to the second market of Sucre, called the Mercado Campesino. Today was actual Mardi Gras/Carnaval, and everyone was celebrating. The market was packed with people buying last minute food for their grills (apparently it is a tradition here to grill on Fat Tuesday, they call it Martes de Challa). This tradition blends Christianity with some of the native traditions, as the grilling and “Challa” represent offerings to the Pachamama (mother earth).

Those grills were EVERYWHERE. In front of houses, businesses, random streets, stalls in the markets. Seriously, all over the place.

Since there was nothing open for us to visit, we decided to take it easy, and drank a bottle of Leche de Tigre. This is a drink commonly imbibed over the Carnaval season which is made from milk, spices (mostly cinnamon), and Singhani (grape based liquor, kind of like pisco). It was delicious! Like dessert in a cup.

As we drank this in the park, we also got attacked a time or two with foam and water…

Lastly, since the local custom involves big Asados (grill-outs) this day, we had to go find an asado of our own. It was really hard to find any restaurants open, but when we finally did, they did not disappoint. We had a huge asado between the two of us. What a perfect way to say good bye to Sucre!
