Day 30 (1/31/18)- Parapente

Another relaxing morning this morning. We got up, headed to the beach for a quick workout, then came back to make a tuna fish salad before getting picked up to go paragliding!!

Iquique is surrounded by mountains/dunes, and, because of the ocean, there is a constant daily breeze blowing in from the oceans and up the mountain range. That fact, combined with the fact that it has only rained in Iquique twice in the last 80 years makes it one of the best places to paraglide in the world. It is a near certainty that the conditions allow you to fly here every single day of the year. Crazy!

They picked us up at 11 and we headed up the range to get a start on things. On the way up, one of the instructors gave us the rundown of exactly what would happen during takeoff and landing. Once we arrived at the takeoff site, things started pretty quickly. Cassie was suited up, then off she went, followed shortly by Alejandro with his guide.

The flight was amazing. Everything was so peacful, and the views of the city, ocean, and dunes weren’t so bad either! We had about a 15-20 minute flight and then, reluctantly, had to descend to land. (I say “had to”, just because it was the length of our tour. The guides told us that its possible to take off at 10 AM and just continue flying on thermals until 4 PM or so).

With enough exhilaration for the day, we spent the afternoon reading on the beach. We had dinner at the market- some sea bass for Cassie and a seafood soup for Alejandro. On the walk back home, we caught an amazing sunset!
