We got up early this morning to get to the airport by 8 to pick up Alejandro’s mom’s luggage as soon as the luggage office opened. Then we had to go to a nearby airport to catch our flight to La Macarena, which left at 10:20. Just as we were pulling in to the airport, we got a call from the United baggage guy saying that he had just tried to drop the luggage off where we were staying, and noone was there. Instead of trying to figure out where to meet him at the airport, we had him leave the bag at the house and we headed back to get it. Alejandro’s mom went through quickly to get out everything she needed for our mini trip and then we rushed back to the airport… just to check in at 9:30 and find out that our flight didn’t actually leave until 12:30… We walked around the airport for a little while, snacked on some arepa de huevo, had some tea/coffee until it was time to board our flight.
It was a quick 50 minute flight to land in the smallish town of La Macarena. We walked to a restaurant to eat lunch, then checked into the hotel. Our first adventure was a 4×4 ride to a swimming hole where we got our first glance of Macarenia Clavigera, the green or pink/purple aquatic plant that can only be found this one place in the world.
We went swimming for a bit, then dried off and headed to watch the sunset at an overlook. It was a little cloudy, but we still got some great views.
We returned to town, showered, then headed to the restaurant next door for dinner, which was so-so. We found out that we had to be ready by 6:15 the next morning, so we went to bed shortly after.
