First thing this morning was a retry of the tour we were going to do yesterday, and, success! No rain. We got our typical walking tour introduction to the city, took a tour of some of the churches and historic buildings, and heard about the history of Popayan.
We liked the Empanadas de Pipian so much yesterday that we decided to have another round today for lunch, which turned out to be even better than yesterday’s. They are pretty small though, so we were still a little hungry. We walked around and tried a couple more things, including an arepa with cheese and chicharron and an arepa de chocolo (more like a corn pancake) with egg and 2 cheeses. We also tried a couple of the local breads- pan de bono, almojabanas, and some kind of fried donut thing.
In the afternoon, we went to the natural history museum which had a pretty large collection of stuffed snakes, birds, insects, and mammals. Not too bad for the $1.33 we paid to get in.
Just before sunset, we hiked up to the top of a small hill near our hostel to watch a beautiful sunset. We grabbed some pre-dinner drinks at a bar we walked by with a bunch of locals. Cassie tried a Michelada, which was very different than an American Michelada- they served it with about 1/3 of the cup full of lime juice, then beer on top. It was yummy!
For dinner, we had made reservations at one of the nicer restaurants in town. We had a 4 course tasting menu for $20/person that we both very much enjoyed. After dinner, we headed back for another Michelada before heading back home to go to sleep.
