Mountainbiking to the Wax Palms

Today we woke up and headed to the mountain bike shop to get ready for our tour. We got on the back of a pickup truck which drove us 1 hour up a mountain to “La Carbonera”, the largest Wax Palm forest in Colombia (possibly the world). The first leg of our cycling was unfortunately a little miserable… At 12,000ft of elevation it was fairly cold, and as soon as we got on the saddle, it starting pouring heavily. Alejandro was so full of mud once we stopped!

We were luckily able to eat lunch under some shelter at a nearby cafe with some hot coffee which raised the spirits. They had a neat hummingbird feeding area where lots of different types of hummingbirds came to visit while we were there. This break also gave the sun some time to come out to start warming things up and shining on the forest!

The palm trees are also HUUUGGEEE. If you click on the middle upper picture you can actually see Cassie standing next to the palm for comparison. Our guide says that the tallest one on record actually broke 60m in height!

By this time spirits were much improved as we rode back up the mountain. We also got to catch all the views that we had missed the first time around due to the low clouds/fog. It was awesome!

After riding the 22km of downhill back to town, we cleaned up and headed to the local Tejo club for a relaxed afternoon. Cassie and Lizzie had played once in Bogota (throwing heavy objects at gunpowder) but it was Alejandro’s first time. After a little while we all got the hang of it and had a “blast” (haha, haha, anyone get it?). Some local food for dinner and then bedtime.
