This morning we headed out on our tour to Perito Moreno Glacier around 8 AM. We did the “alternative” route, which basically took us through the countryside on a gravel road on the way to the glacier and then the main highway on the way back. We saw a lot of wildlife, including multiple groups of Rhea (the ostrich like animals), Crested Caracara (type of falcon), and we stopped at a goat farm for a short bathroom break. We also tried Calafate berries (for which the town was named; the myth is that if you try the berry, it guarantees your return to El Calafate).
We got our first glance of the glacier, and stopped to do a short hike through the forest.
After that, we finally arrived at the main attraction, the glacier! Though we had seen a lot of glaciers in Antarctica, it was really cool to see this one so close up. It is also one of the most active accessible glaciers, and there was a lof of calving events. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to catch any on camera. They had a few kilometers of trails looking close up at different levels of the glacier, so we wandered around for a few hours taking it all in. Here are some of our favorite pictures.
We got back from the tour around 5pm and hung out around the hostel that evening doing some planning.
