Day 39- The Crater of Maragua

Woke up the today and we were pleasantly surprised with the rays of sunshine hitting our cabin window. We went ahead and made a hot breakfast then took off for our next town called Maragua. Here are some views from the trek, a lot more colors now with the sun out.

When we finally made it to Maragua we could see why it is a point of attraction for tourism. The town is located inside a “crater” which turns out is probably not really a crater at all. Our guide told us there are 3 theories as to how this rock formation was created. 1) Meteor strike; this is unlikely as no meteoric metals have been found, and there are also a couple hills towards the center of the crater which would not be the case if this was a meteor strike. 2) Volcano; there is no lava rock to find so also unlikely. 3) Tectonic forces going up against each other causing a buckling upward around the center creating the “bowl” shape that is seen. This is the leading theory at the moment. Once we made it over the lip of the bowl we had to hike through these strange looking valleys caused by water erosion, it again felt like maybe we were back on Mars (just ignore the green grass around it)!

Unfortunately by the time we made it to the town it started raining on us again so we weren’t able to walk around much and get better views of the “crater”… Hopefully the sun will be back again tomorrow morning to get better pictures of the rock formations. For the rest of the evening we just hung out and caught up on some reading until dinner time and then bed.
